Travel Health: Travel in Comfort
Travel is full of unforgettable sights and adventures, but it can also expose you to unwanted surprises: rough seas, contaminated water, dry airplane air. These six new products can help make your next trip healthier and more enjoyable
BY HANNAH WALLACE
The Problem
Dry eyes.
The Solution
Bausch + Lomb’s new Biotrue multi-purpose contact solution ($5.50 for 2 oz; at drugstores). Keep your eyes moisturized for 20 hours—that’s more than double the relief provided by other contact solutions.

The Problem
Hardy bacteria and viruses lurking on surfaces.
The Solution
Germs-Off Cloth ($25; Travelsmith.com). This new antimicrobial wipe is made of silver bonded to nylon.  Reusable; won’t degrade after washing.

The Problem
Intestinal discomfort caused by contaminated food or water.
The Solution
Acidophilus Pearls ($23 for 90 capsules; drugstore.com). Some adventurous eaters try to proactively protect themselves by taking a probiotic. These capsules don’t need refrigeration, so they’re handy for travelers.

The Problem
Motion sickness.
The Solution
Motion bands from Sea-Band ($10; sea-band.com). Worn on the wrists, these bands use acupressure to help relieve nausea caused by motion; no need for medication.

The Problem
Deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in a vein, usually in the leg).
The Solution
Jobst compression tights or knee-highs (from $40, at pharmacies or jobst.com). Before a long flight, talk to your doctor about compression hose, which can improve blood flow and prevent swelling.

The Problem
Unsafe drinking water.
The Solution
SteriPEN Freedom ($120; Travelsmith.com). This rechargeable pocket-sized purifier employs a germicidal ultraviolet light to make water clean in just 48 seconds. And it doubles as a flashlight!

Consider consulting your physician before using any over-the-counter products. Use all products as directed.
